Los Angeles Stack House

Located in a small California beach town, the original house was built over 80 years before our first discussions with the client. The house contained several small, distinct rooms, rigidly divided between three stories. The interior needed more light, open space, and better views.

The redesign focused on eliminating walls between living areas and maximizing water views. Vertical circulation spaces act as sunlit display areas between floors. Skylights in the south-facing roof direct diffused light into back corners of the floor plan. Exterior materials withstand the harsh demands of a beach climate. Engineered wood panels that resist fading cover the master bedroom wing next to a backdrop of smooth trowel stucco.
